YS Book II and I: The story of YS book I and II is the basis for all the other games.
The underlying plot from Book I and II is in the others even though they are different
adventures. About 700 years ago YS was a prosperous land with no problems at all
(Too bad that never lasts). There are six priests and two goddesses that keep things in
harmony in YS, however, one day a metal called Cleria was found in the ground in the
land of YS and the surrounding countryside. This metal had the power of magic and it
was used to make mystical weapons and armor. However, magic always has two sides,
good and evil. Depending on how you use magic it can heal or destroy things. From the
magic properties of Cleria an evil presence was born. This evil spawned many demons
and one ultimate one called Darm (The main villain of Book II).
There are six priests in the land of YS, and in order to keep the evil from spreading they
devised a plan to move the main part of YS (The capital) into the sky, out of harms reach.
Together with the power of the goddesses, they moved the entire main section of YS into the sky
(This is a LARGE section of land). Unfortunately, the evil influence had already spread there.
Now 700 years later, the goddesses who protect YS are nowhere to be found and of course,
the six original priests are dead. However, the priests have descendants to carry on the line.
The first six priests wrote six books about that fateful day in YS's history. These books contain
information and some powerful sealed magic of the priests as well. The hero of our story
(Adol Christen) hears this story, and decides to go to YS and see for himself. He is an adventurer
and the story interests him. He sails from a town called Pramalok. From Pramalok he must sail to
the main continent where YS is located, but the sailors in Pramalok Tell him that no one has been
able to make it there for years because of storms that prevent anyone From getting there. Almost
getting himself killed, Adol arrives in YS through some incredible trials, and is washed up on the
beach in the port town of YS called Barbador. Adol then goes to the nearby large town of Minea
(This town is where YS Book I begins for the PC-Engine. There is no mention of Pramalok and
Barbador, but YS I Eternal includes this section of the story.) Now Adol's adventure begins in the
land of YS. He has to find out where the 6 books and the goddesses

YS Book III: YS book III takes off at the end of book II. Adol goes with Dogi to look for some more adventure, seeing, as there is nothing else to do. They go to Dogi's hometown over the sea where Dogi was born. They leave a very sad Lilia behind (who has a crush on Adol) and go in search of Dogi's homeland. When they arrive, they find that something has happened and some monster sealed there has reawakened. Adol begins anew to help the townspeople survive this ordeal and to eradicate this monster. YS III is a side view game so it is more like an action RPG. It is not as much fun to play as YS II, IV, and I. Nevertheless, it is a good addition, and it is still an official YS game. The game takes place in a different location than YS, but there is reference to YS several times.
Main Characters of YS III:
Adol and Dogi of course (Characters from previous YS games)
Elena (A childhood friend of Dogi, who gets into trouble often it seems)
Chester (Elena's older brother, who seems to be involved somehow)
Mayor Brady (Mayor of the main town in YS III)
King Macquire (King of Valestine castle who seems to be working with Demonicus)
Demonicus (The main villain in YS III)
YS Book IV: I'll get this one done when I have time, I am still in the process of translating specific details as this game is only in Japanese, but it is a great game with an incredible story intertwined with YS Book I and II. I am working on translation so please be patient. COMING SOON.
Main Characters of YS IV: (Many are from the other books)
Adol Christian (um, who did you expect?)
Carna (mysterious girl of a hidden village, a tough fighter and ally)
Bammy (A magic caster, causing lots of trouble for Adol)
Gadis (A very strong man, and fierce opponent)
Guruder (A sly leader who is out for power)
Leisa (a village girl who holds some secret)
El-Deal (One of the main villains of YS IV, he wants Leisa for some reason)
Characters in YS IV from Previous games:
Lilia (Back again to be with Adol, guess he will have to save her again at some point)
Goban (The thief, back to help Adol once again)
Dogi (This time smashing down more walls for Adol)
Feena and Lair (in their goddess form to help Adol out)
Sarah (I always wondered what happened to her in Book I, now she is back)
Darm (Hey, even he makes a come back ^_^ Wait and see what happens!)
Keith Fact (a descendant of Dark Fact, now he is back in human form)
There are exactly four official YS games in existence. There are a few others that exist, but they are NOT official YS games! The original YS games are YS Book I, II, III, and IV. There is a game called YS V: Mask of the sun, and another YS V game, but these two are not official. To be official, it has to have been made by the original group and creator. The first four YS games were made by Falcon/Hudson team of Japan. The others were not, so they are just extras that some companies made to try to keep the game alive. They only carry the name YS, and the name of the hero basically (Adol), and a few other characters. Other than that, they are unrelated and are not true sequels of the first four. It must be done by the Falcom/Hudon team for it to be a true YS game. Beware; there are a few remakes out there. These four games were made and created for the NEC PC-Engine Turbo Duo of Japan. They can also be played on the TG-16, and some other NEC Console systems. The first two (Book I and II) are on the same game CD. There is also a version of YS III for the Super Nintendo. There are Japanese versions of all of the first four. YS II, III, and I have English versions and were translated for American audiences. There is no English version of YS IV, unless it is a hack. There is only the Japanese version. NEC did not translate YS IV, so it is impossible to get the original YS IV in English.
YS VI: The Ark of Napishtim
New to the series is YS VI. This is an actual official YS game released by Falcon in 2003. It is for PC so I should have included it below in the PC Games section, but I wanted to mention it here, as it is a new and official addition to the series. This game is currently on PC only, but may go to the Japanese Playstation 2 eventually. It has a new 3D engine, so that the world Adol is in is now 3D, but do not let that hinder you from picking up YS VI. The game is very fun, and keeps the fun elements of the first two games in the series. It has some return characters as well: Adol of course, and Dogi, plus Raba (the old man from Darm Tower YS Book I). The game is fairly short, but has great replay value and definitely one for a YS fan's collection! I will try to put up more info on this game when I can, but for now I am having too much fun playing it. : P
The PC Games: The first YS game (Book I) was made and released for the Personal Computer. Others followed it, and you can basically get the first three for your computer. These are of course old, and not as good as the PC-Engine versions, but they are classics. In addition, NEC has released an official remake of YS book I, and II for the PC, See Below.
YS I ETERNAL
Released in Japan, 1998: This game is a "redone" version of the original YS Book I game for the Personal Computer. This game is made for, and is only on the PC. It will work on an American computer, so feel free to pick it up if you can find it! This is an excellent game only sold in Japan, but it may be possible to get it in the states through special import companies. This game is the same as the original YS Book I, except it has New Graphics, New Effects, New versions of the original great YS music, and some added cut scenes to make the story come alive. This game is necessary have for any YS fan. Some added effects include: (Feena follows you when you rescue her, so you have to help her to not get hurt and get her out of the shrine), (Treasure chests with special items will glow and light will radiate out of them when you open them), (Teleporting around the shrine has a special light effect now). There are many others of course, and the cut scenes are an amazing addition to this game. The bosses have all been improved upon as well. This game is actually more difficult than the original. This game ends with the fight with Dark Fact at the top of Darm Tower. Dark Fact is the last boss in YS Book I.
YS II ETERNAL
Released in Japan on June 12, 2000: Wow! I was in Japan when this game was released. It was sold out for 3 months, and on reserve. I was finally able to get a copy of it, and it is incredible! This game is another remake of the original YS II game. As with YS I Eternal, this has many added features and fixed up graphics. The battle effects have been improved, and the magic abilities that Adol has have been made to do some new and neat effects. The music has also been redone. Some of the bosses even do some different attacks and spells. A big difference between this game and the original are that you are closer to Adol (The Hero) on the main screen. This makes for more detailed maps and enemies. (YS I Eternal is also made this way). This game takes up where YS I Eternal left off, and finishes with the final fight with Darm at the YS Core. This is a much sought after game and very well done! A new feature of this one is that it contains some Full Motion Video scenes that are an incredible sight to see! The introduction in itself is incredible. This game is necessary have for any YS collector! Unfortunately, this game will not work very "well" on an American computer. If you have Japanese windows then you have no problem. With American windows, it is possible to trick the game and install it, however it has a problem with the save file. You can only save one game and you can only return to it if you die. (This is because of the absence of some .dll files that only Japanese windows have. Also, American windows cannot read the save files) It is possible to play this game however. I highly recommend getting this one if you have a chance!

YS STUFF
The YS Anime: Yeah, YS on the big screen! Anime is a word for Animation in Japan. These are "cartoon" versions of the YS novels. They are very accurate and seem to follow the game as well. Unfortunately, these never came to the states either, so it is only in Japanese once again. There are fansub versions available though. There are seven episodes of YS Book I, and there are four episodes of YS Book II. The different sets were done by different artists, so YS II looks a bit different from YS I. The seven episodes of Book I am pretty old, but they are great to watch. It is like watching the game on TV in full animation! YS Book II is newer and has better artwork. It is very well done. The Anime collection is available on eight VHS tapes, which are pretty much non-existent any more. The only form of these films that can be found is the LD (Laser Disc) set. There are several LD's for the YS series and they include all the episodes mentioned above.
There is also a special (All about Falcon) YS collectable LD that has music video's and special scenes, all relating to YS. There are also some other Falcon games on the LD. The Anime for YS is the BEST! If you are a collector, this is the one thing that should be sought after first! It is great to see you favorite game characters from YS on the big screen. The music is evensongs straight from YS games and redone for a movie type setting. Please note that there is only Anime for YS Book I and II. There is no Anime for YS III. There WAS going to be a YS IV Anime set, but the project was cancelled. There are actually a few scenes of the YS IV Anime on the Special Falcon LD. However, the Anime is not available to buy, nor was it finished. Even if you do not like YS or never heard of it, the Anime is great! Get it if you can! The Anime is also expected to go up in value for collectors, and to an extent, it has already.
The YS Soundtracks: I am not going into detail about all the YS soundtracks, because there are just too many of them to list. If you want to see a good list with covers of all the YS CD's then go to Ara's YS page (Another excellent YS page). You will find a link to her page in the Links section. One of the most famous and well-known RPG's is the Final Fantasy Series. There are now a total of 10 FF games, and a few for Game Boy. The music from Final Fantasy has won awards, and there are quite a few soundtracks for FF games. Nevertheless, YS beats this out easily. At last count, there are a total of 48 YS soundtracks. This way beats out the FF set of music, which is impressive, but it does not come close to this. The YS soundtracks are some of the best game music to ever be put on CD. Right up there with FF and Castlevania, game music. However, YS music is different, and special. There are tons of variations to the YS soundtracks.
You can get the completely original music collection for each game and the Anime as well as incredible variations. To name a few there is YS Renewal, YS Piano Collection, YS Symphony, YS Dramatic Concert, YS Vocal collection, YS JDK Band special. You will find one of these CD's for each YS Book sometimes also. Some of the music from YS was so famous that the London Symphony Orchestra (very prestigious group) decided they wanted to do a version of an existing YS song. Eventually they made an entire CD dedicated to YS. Most YS CD's are very hard to find now, and they are collector’s items.
One that just recently came out called "The Best of YS" is fairly easy to get still. If you look on the back of "The Best of YS" CD, you will see a song near the bottom titled Lilia, with some Kanji after it. Under the song title, you can see in English the phrase "Composed by the London Symphony Orchestra". This is one of the songs from the CD they did. In addition, speaking of Lilia (one of the main YS characters), There is actually an entire CD dedicated to just her. I have never seen a CD dedicated to a game character before. Final Fantasy does not even have that. The entire CD is a collection of all the Lilia songs from the game and Anime, and Lilia herself (her voice actress) sings some songs as well on the CD. YS music is incredible, as seen by the large interest in it by major music groups, and the amazing number of CD's produced. You can get 10 versions of just one YS song sometimes, ranging from slow, to hard rock versions and piano solo versions. The Vocal collection CD was made because many people wanted to hear these amazing tunes put to words. So many YS tunes are now real songs with words and lyrics. There are English and Japanese versions of these songs. Moreover, to top it all off, check out the whole YS band that was made just for YS music! See Below.
The YS Band: YS has every thing else you could think of, so why not it's own band? Yes, YS has its own Band. It is called the YS JDK Band, and they do all the music for the YS games and the Anime. This band is a part of the Falcon team and they do music for many other Falcon games, but they are mainly known for their YS music. The YS music is very well done, and so there are many versions and soundtracks as mentioned above. In fact, the YS Band even has concerts in Japan. There is no other video game that I know of that has its own Band. This shows the greatness of YS, an actual game that has its own live band! There are some scenes from some YS JDK Band concerts on the Falcon Special LD. You would think that "game" music would not be as interesting as a concert right. Think again! There are tons of people that go to these concerts, and the Band is pretty famous as well. If you get to see the live video, look at the audience also, there are quite a few people there. I would definitely go to a YS concert if I got the chance!
Other YS Stuff: We are not done yet! There is actually more YS stuff than I know of. Here are a few other YS things that I have or I have confirmed their existence. There are YS Phone Cards, YS Game Books, YS Figures (Lilia, Adol, Lair, and Feena), YS posters, YS bookends, and collector’s cards. There are many other "small" YS items out there to add to a collection. There's allot more to YS than some people think! Get out there and start collecting!
YS began as a video game produced by Falcon/Hudson team of Japan. Actually, I guess it really began as a story. An incredible adventure story that soon became an RPG legend. YS is still ranked up there with many famous RPG's such as the Final Fantasy series, and the Seiken Densetsu epic. It an amazing tale, one that J.R.R. Tolkein would be proud of.
There are many YS "Things" out there, such as the Anime, graphic novels, and Manga books. However, the YS RPG game is what gives YS its greatness. There were four official YS games released at different times. YS Book I "Ancient YS Vanished" released in 1987, YS Book II, "Part II of Ancient YS Vanished" released in 1988, YS III "Wanderers from YS" released in 1990, YS IV "The Dawn of YS" released in 1993, and now YS VI has also been released in 2003! It is the newest in the series and is called YS VI: The Ark of Napishtim.

Manga is Japanese for Comics basically. There are seven YS Manga books available. These are comics, and are not quite related to the original YS story. They are only available in Japanese. These books are fun to have and have some great artwork in them. Some YS fans will not like them because they "stretch" some story elements, and they are at times incredibly silly. Some things in the Manga are very incorrect (such as Jeva is a young woman with "evil" magic), (Some of the YS priests as if Toba, and Messa, are still alive), and (YS if floating on a large “monsters” back in the sky. All these things are contrary to the original story, but the Manga are interesting and make for a good addition to a YS collection.
These are pretty difficult to find, but are definitely worth it if you can find them. These are the original YS stories written as books. They are full novel type books with some pictures every 30 pages or so. They are entirely written in Japanese. Here is the collection: one YS I novel, one YS II novel, three YS III novels (it is a set), three YS IV novels (another set), and (for now) two YS V novels. These are the main ones, and there are a few others that have been written by other authors (kind of like Star Wars books are written by different people). I have only listed the ones from the original creator. There are other YS Novels, but they have slightly different storylines and are written by other authors. These books are interesting in that you can read about the whole YS adventure in a book Of course you need to be able to read Japanese (minor set back). However, these books are neat, and contain the original YS story. The YS games and the Anime are based off these novels. The novels however have more details and things going on then the games (Kind of like the idea of 'The book is better than the movie"). Get these if you can, they are expected to become valuable.
